The word Budo fuses the two concepts of “Bu” - “Martial” and “Do” - “Path” or “Way”. “Budo” is often translated as the “Martial Way”, which is rooted in the warrior ethic of the samurai. Because “Do” also carries the meaning of virtue and morality, practitioners of true martial arts train not only to strengthen their bodies but also to develop character and awareness and educate their spirit to better overcome the challenges of daily life. This is all part of one’s training to evolve into a stronger, more flexible and responsible member of society.
Contrary to the competitive mindset in many sports which prioritizes defeating all opponents in order to emerge as the winner, Budo philosophy implies consideration for the well-being of others as well as the self. It recognizes that one’s existence depends on the existence of others, and so the active pursuit of a harmonious community is essential for our own future and that of future generations.
